The New Digital School

presents

Tomorrow Conference

Jun 19th - 23rd / Porto - Portugal
What is this?

A series of workshops and meetups to explore the new possibilities and challenges new technologies bring and their design applications.

It’s also the light edition of a bigger event that will happen in 2018. Powered by The New Digital School.

Why are we doing this?

Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Machine Learning, Blockchain, Internet of Things are only some of the new technologies and words that have entered in our toolbox and vocabulary. There’s no shortage of content on these topics, however it’s often too complex for non-experts to distill without guidance. It’s essential that the designers of today and tomorrow understand the possibilities and challenge these technologies represent.
New possibilities = new ways to solve old or new problems
New challenges = changes in mindset and ethical considerations

For who is this?

Digital Designers (UX, UI, Product...) who recognise that their future design challenges will go far beyond their current everyday tasks, and that see technology as an inevitable tool to solve those challenges.

How Will Anticipatory Design Challenge Our Relationship with Technology?

The development towards anticipatory experiences is welcome by most since the human brain is not made for the number of choices we have to make on a daily basis. For his Masters Digital Experience Design at Hyper Island, Joel has researched within the field of design and the ethical challenges we face during the development of machine learning-based anticipatory systems. In this meetup, he will guide a discussion around topics like privacy, ownership (of data), level of automation, experience bubble and free will.

Your role in shaping the Internet of Things

The promises brought by the Internet of Things can potentially affect all areas of human activity, from intelligent factories, to life in the cities, to health and lifestyle, to professional life. All these changes can become a reality in a very near future, making our day-to- day life quite different, once again. As with all the great transformations that humankind faced before there are many optimist and pessimist scenarios that are lining up. In this meetup we’ll evaluate these scenarios critically and analyze the current and future challenges from the point of view of the citizen/consumer, discussing the impact that these developments have on our rights, security, and privacy.

Workshop

09:30 - 17:00

Data Science in 7 steps

In recent years machine learning (ML) left the academic world and spread to several areas achieving major breakthroughs. This area has its roots in mathematics, statistics and computer science, which leads people to believe ML is a rather difficult topic, only accessible to experts. Furthermore, it is a key part of artificial intelligence, elevating the misconception of its complexity. The purpose of this workshop is to end this misconception and introduce the basics of ML and how it can be used in your projects. You’ll be introduced to programs, libraries and tools that help non-experts users to take advantage of ML.
